About Felt

Wool Felt is a natural fiber harvested from the fleece of sheep that has been used for centuries, proving the material is sustainable and durable, even in demanding applications.

FilzFelt carries German-milled 100% Wool Design Felt and felt products in over ninety colors. A biodegradable and renewable material, wool felt is moisture resistant, self-extinguishing, and known for its thermal and acoustic insulation properties and highly saturated and lightfast colors.

Go Sheep!

Wool is a natural fiber harvested from sheep. Sheep’s wool is highly regarded for its crimped, elastic fibers that are easily felted to form a highly durable fabric. Wool is naturally long-lasting, has excellent dyeability, is resistance to flame and compression, and provides thermal and sound insulation. Plus, this natural fiber is a rapidly renewable resource (it grows back!) and is 100% biodegradable.

Renewable, Sustainable, Green

Yes! All of the above. Wool felt is a natural product. The processing of wool requires very little environmental impact compared to other natural fibers or man-made fibers. Due to the inherent durability of wool, felt has a life cycle that is substantially longer than other upholstery material.

Biodegradable and Compostable

100% Wool Design Felt is a nonwoven textile made from sheep’s wool, water, and plant-based textile dyes making it biodegradable with the ability to be commercially composted.

Acoustic Properties

Wool Design Felt is inherently sound absorptive and in addition to adding a natural and soft texture to interiors, improves room acoustics for a more comfortable environment. FilzFelt offers a range of products that achieve a NRC rating from 0.2 for direct applied felt to 1.2 for acoustic baffles.

Low to No VOCs

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are not used in the production of 100% Wool Design Felt and it meets VOC test limits for the CDPH v1.2 method.

Happy Sheep!

Animal welfare is important to us. Sheep are well-fed, comfortable, and free to engage in their natural behaviors. Sheep grow wool continuously to protect them from weather. Their fleece keeps them warm in winter and shearing keeps them cool in the summer while also protecting them from illness.

Color

Wool felt isn’t just biodegradable and compostable with inherent durability and resilience. The structure of wool allows for excellent dye penetration which produces highly saturated, clean and lightfast colors.

It’s a Natural Matter

Sheep are free-roaming animals and vegetable matter can be caught in their fleece. Washing and carbonizing remove some of this debris; however, color variation and inclusions of natural fiber on the surface are evidence of 100% natural origin of the material. This variation in color and thickness between dyelots and within felt bolts can be attributed to the natural occurrences of the natural color of the raw wool and absorption of the dyes.

Wool Felt Takes the LEED

Wool Design Felt qualifies for LEED® certification as MR Credit 6.0 Rapidly Renewable Resource as the sheep’s wool is harvested in a sustainable manner as the hair grows back! And even better, FilzFelt felts have been tested and certified to meet the human-ecological requirements of the standard presently established for products with direct contact to skin according to Product Class II of Oeko-Tex® Standard 100.
