Hex Hanging Panels Get Their Day in the Sun

When Eppstein Uhen Architects were tasked with renovating a massive 1940s Allis Chalmers manufacturing plant for Johnson Controls, the goal was to allow the existing industrial building to shine while accommodating a modern workforce in need of flexible, collaborative space. Going against workplace convention, the office plan eliminates the traditional enclosed office and encourages non-hierarchical communication. This layout unites workers with differing functions and work styles, however, creates the need for unconventional space division.

To break up the vast space, Hex Hanging Panels in standard large and custom sizes hang on custom suspended tracks at ends of workstation clusters to create separation while retaining an open, expansive feel. Elsewhere, panels are installed on sliding tracks and paired with white boards to create flexible space use and division. In addition, the panels add intense color contrasting with the existing industrial building materials. This project won an AIA Wisconsin Honor Award in 2015.
